i waited until almost dinnertime to start my 5 page paper due today so i felt really bad about that...still since i had done all the research and outlined it really well, it only took about 2 hours to write. after emailing it in some of us went downtown for dinner. when i came back i had this email:

Hi Jane,

this is the best draft I've ever seen. but I still gave you some comments. see the attached.

Thanks,
Linlin

TOTALLY made my day :)

hehehe, there was an article linked from slashdot about a shark-shaped submarine with cameras and stuff to record natural shark behevior without divers or cages around. my favorite part of the article: Since Troy cannot respond in a sophisticated, sharklike manner, Cousteau decided that while the great whites do buy that he's a shark, they consider him more like a "retarded cousin from Australia."

(Troy is the name of the shark and Cousteau (the grandson of the famous one) is the one in the shark)

Unacceptable.

what a fabulous day. i got to sleep in, i finished up my homework, we had a nice midwestern thunderstorm (not long enough to ruin the day or anything), i walked 2 dogs and played with lots of cats, i ddr'd until my feet hurt (no line at all, just me for more than an hour!), got yummy groceries (strawberries, salsa con queso, asparagus, etc, mmm....), ate 3 servings of wonderful salad with dinner (god i miss good veggies), and i get to look forward to seeing Ruby tomorrow (one of my favorite dogs from the daycare, she's a red dobie, absolutely gorgeous). take that world!

10:12 pm - my triumphant return....i guess...
you know how people always say pets are great because you get unconditional love from them? well, i decided the reason i like cats is specifically because they give you very very conditional love. when you do things they enjoy, like scratching their chins or feeding them, they'll purr or knead their paws or rub up against you or such, and when you do things they don't enjoy, like putting them in cat carriers or introducing them to the neighbor's dog, they'll swat at you or hiss or growl or such. there's no question whether the cat is happy or angry with you, and you don't have to worry that they're lying just to make you feel better or something. because lately i've noticed that people often don't say what it is that's bothering them, and instead they let it fester until they can't stand it anymore. there's never the chance of that problem with cats.
summary: i <3 cats

of course i always have weird dreams, but i felt like blogging about them today, especially since i've been really bad about blogging....for like the last year, haha

so haynes comes back around 6 tonight, but in my dream he came back already. only i was at my house in iowa and that's where he came back to. odd. and i kept kinda waking up and thinking "where's haynes, he came back already?" and then falling asleep and there he was and i was so confused about the whole thing. and then the strangest part of the dream was my dad had turned into a giant german shepard. as in, the dog. he was sitting near the stairs in my house and i could pet his head from the second floor. i remember remarking that i had never seen a dog that large. and then i went looking for haynes and instead brought in the mail. it had a magazine with an article on how to pick the right dog for your family and the front picture was of st bernards. and then, because i have to be a worrywort in all my dreams, i was thinking about how i was missing my classes, but i couldn't remember which ones were at which times

so i guess it wasn't that weird by my dream standards, hehe

I was gonna post about all the crap travelling (delays, running between flights, blah) or about how chad mank is an idiot and says i'm in a room in chapin despite the fact that i'm not (it'll get sorted out), but instead, i'll just say how awesome it is to be back in new england. and scoot was really cool about my flight coming in late -- we even took a quick detour to techhouse and i got to see beca! (and others! yay!) this semester is gonna be great! woot!

if two points make a line and the third confirms it, what about the fourth? ( and no, i'm not looking for an answer, i'm just cryptically making fun of myself :P )

i don't have one of those paid accounts so no lj poll for me, but i still have a question for you guys.

Are you happy?
I mean taking into account your current social, physical and mental states, are you generally happy?

scale is from 1 to 5:
1 very unhappy
2 mildly unhappy
3 ambivalent
4 mildly happy
5 very happy

i have a score picked out for me, but i want to hear your answers first. and don't just give a number, explain why too. remember, this is a general thing, so don't say you're unhappy cause you didn't sleep last night or something :P

you know how once you stop writing in your lj it's so hard to start up again? i feel like i need to start all over and tell you everything that happened this semester. if you don't really care, stop now, cause it might be boring.
ok, let's see...
my classes have been decent this semester. discrete math is as boring as it sounds, but at least it's boring and easy. cs was a lot of review, and the lectures were straight from the notes, but altogether not too bad. japanese was awesome for the most part. sadly, i don't think i can fit ja20 into my schedule next semester. but i decided to look into a summer program, like 6 weeks-ish, at some university in japan. sooooo many choices though, i hardly know where to start.
then there's my job. at the end of august i started working for a doggie daycare/boarding/bathing place. i'm usually in charge of a group of 10-15 dogs at any one time. sometimes it's a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of lifting and cleaning and answering phone calls and such. and it doesn't pay that well. i'll be glad when it's done, but i think i'd do it again if i had the choice.
there has been some stuff with boys, mostly frustration and junk that i'm not gonna go into. if you need to be a gossip hound, you can ask me on aim or something.
i'm getting really excited about going back to brown. i think my classes for next semester look good and it's still possible for me to graduate on time -- how did that happen? i can't wait to see you guys!! (and the ones not at brown, i miss you too!)
my cpap seems to be working ok. i still sleep a fair amount, but some of it i'm contributing to boredom and lack of other things to do. at any rate, i haven't really had problems getting to work or classes (except those days when class isn't worth going to, hehe) and i feel soooo much more awake during the day. i can actually concentrate and get work done; it's pretty cool.
my brother comes back from a semester in belgium this saturday, and my last final is tuesday night so winter break is fast upon us. i even saw a christmas carol with my parents and laura at the newly renovated theater.
i think that's most of the news for now. happy hannukah to all those jews out there :)

ok, i think i've figured out classes. if i do the ai track of the ab cs degree, i only have to take 7 cs courses total and cg102. which means as long as the discrete math course i'm taking here transfers and counts as cs22, i don't have to take more than 2 cs courses per semester and still graduate on time (actually, it should still work even if it doesn't transfer). this spring i'll take cs18 (hopefully easy since i've done most of the stuff already), cg102 (yay, no prereqs), py80 (animal behavior, woot), and one more course. any suggestions? i always wanted to take a course with my friends, what are you guys taking that i would like? btw, for the cs degree i need to take a "writing course" defined as one where you have to write at least 2 essays. what could i take for that? something that's not in the english dept, please.
so then next fall i'll take cs31 and cs51 and 2 hopefully fun things not related. maybe ja15.
and then spring 06 (is it really that soon?) cs32 and cs141. this'll probably be the hardest semester, though cs141 only has cs18 as a prereq, so maybe it's not that hard...
as a side note, i figured out my talent! it's languages, not just spoken ones either. "languages" i know so far include english (duh), german, spanish, latin, japanese (not all very well though, heh), java, visual basic, c++, scheme (also not all very well). so i guess maybe it's good that my cs advisor is going to be a guy who specializes in languages and computers. though i never was a fan of parsing...
ok, so what am i supposed to do with this language thing? gimme some of your thoughts

So as i was falling asleep last night i was thinking: this is like christmas eve, but despite all my best efforts, i don't know whether i'm going to wake up to candy and presents or coal.
it looks like for the very first time santa isn't gonna pull through with the goods. just as well he isn't real i guess.
